Thinking of Georgia, immediately the beautiful wooden houses from the movie “gone with the wind” come to mind. Furthermore, one directly thinks of the flair of the
Southern States, large plantations in the middle surrounded by huge cotton fields, Ray Charles’ “Georgia on my mind” –the official state hymn- and traditional barbecues. In short, Georgia stands for everything that is the South of America. The state’s capital and largest city is Atlanta. Here, or rather at the “Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport“ – the airport with the world’s largest amount of passengers passing through daily– usually starts with a trip through Georgia’s swamps. However, also the city is definitely worth a visit. Here you can visit the headquarters of news giant number one in the CNN tower. Or visit the “The World of Coca-Cola”-Museum where you’ll find all about the history of the best-known soft drink in the world. If you’re more interested in the less old past of the USA, you should use the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Martin Luther King Jr. This well-known defender of human rights was born in Atlanta, and you can visit e.g., the house where he was born. But Atlanta has more to offer: the Georgia Aquarium offers unique insights into the underwater world. This largest indoor aquarium in the world hosts over 100,000 sea creatures ranging from sea horses to whale sharks.
Should you have seen enough of Atlanta, the best is to organize a rental car and drive into the countryside. This is the place where you can encounter the famous hospitality and flair of the southern states with their beautiful wooden houses, wide plantations, and the cordial people.
If you’re a fan of cultivated live music, you should definitely spend some time in Athens. This university town is well known for its music scene that has produced bands like “R.E.M.”, “The B-52’s”, and –more recently- “Now it’s overhead”. In any of the live-clubs of the city center you’ll find some band you like, and they’re playing every day. For this reason Athens was elected “hottest university town for rock music” in 2003 by the Rolling Stone Magazine. In general, this town is famous for its liberal atmosphere and extensive night life. You’ll find a bit calmer conditions in Savannah. This town is predominantly popular for its old town with its land marked restored old houses and green little squares. Here you can feel like Forrest Gump, sitting on the bench in the idyllic park where the “life is a box of chocolates” scene was shot.
Also sport lovers will love Georgia; in Atlanta you can stroll through the Olympic Village of the 1996 summer games or visit one of the many stadiums for a game of the Atlanta Hawks (Basketball), Atlanta Braves (Baseball) or Atlanta Falcons (Football). In addition, you can watch one of the successful teams of the University of Georgia for a game of one of the College Sports.
The Peach State can clearly be enjoyed best from a (rental) car, because only when driving through the wide fields, the wild natural swamps or along the Atlantic coast you’ll appreciate its natural beauty best. |
