Salou

The coastal town of Salou is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain. Here everything is one hundred percent setup to take care of visitors and one recreational activity after another is offered. Salou is located on the Costa Dorada,
about 6 miles away from the provincial capital of Tarragona, and it only has 20,000 inhabitants. During the peak season, there are about ten times as many people, or approximately 200,000. In the city you can clearly recognize traces of modernist art and architecture. Many buildings are designed by architect Domènech Sugranyes i Gras, a student of Gaudí. A special attraction is the Casa Bonet, which along with other buildings, is located on the Paseo Jaime I. This boulevard is more than half a mile long and lined with palm trees, flowers and other Mediterranean plants – taking a walk down it is worth it! At the end you will come to the Lluminosa Font, a fountain that in the summer shows its best through a daily show of water and light. With a rental car in Salou you can travel quickly and comfortably.

Salou itself is not a city with a strong historical character and center and it also does not have many cultural attractions. The one highlight or other, however, can be seen. There is, for example, the Iglesia de Santa Maria del Mar from the 18th century which was mainly built for the fishermen of the village. Also worth seeing are the lighthouse of Salou, one of the most important on the coast of Tarragona and the Parc de Salou on Calle de Carles Buïgas. This a great place to retreat to if you want to rest a few minutes without the bustling of all the other tourists. On the same street are most of the shops, bars and restaurants of Salou and at night this part of the city transforms into a colorful, bustling area for night owls. Parallel to this street there is the Playa de Levante, the largest and widest beach in Salou. The other, Playa de Poniente, is a natural beach and a little smaller than the Levant, but no less of a destination for the many tourists. For those who like a little quiet, they should go to the bay of the Playa de Llenguadets, which is surrounded by nature and by the Calle de la Torrassa. It can only be reached on foot.

In Salou are some of the best restaurants that can be found on the Costa Dorada. Especially fish and seafood, but also the local wine, is recommended. Those that have put on pounds from all the good eating will find enough opportunities in Salou to work it all off again. Especially water sports, such as water skiing, jet skiing or scuba diving, are popular activities here.

If you are with the family in Salou, or if simply enjoy amusement parks and roller coasters, then you should take a trip to the "PortAventura". The largest Spanish leisure resort is visited by 3.5 million people annually and has no less to offer than Disneyland. Especially the roller coaster "Dragon Khan" is a great attraction. With the rental car from Salou you can reach "PortAventura" in just a short drive of only a few minutes.

If you want to take in a little of the culture, then you should take a trip to the provincial capital of Tarragona. If you have a car rental in Salou, then you are less than a 10 minute drive away from here. The city is full of monuments like the Roman Amphitheater, the Roman Forum, or the aqueduct bridge "Aqüeducte de les Ferrers." A trip to the historic that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2000 is worth it! It is even worth taking a rental car from Salou just for this reason.

Salou and the surrounding area have something to offer for everyone. There is relaxation, diverse recreational activities and an interesting cultural program that leave no wishes unfulfilled. If that is not enough, then you at the latest you will be thrilled by the wonderful nature and the beautiful ocean scenery!
