Foggia is just any southern Italian city.  In the interior of the province with the same name, you will find a beautiful landscape and in it a city with a lively flair, several monuments and a rich culture.

Don’t forget the unbelievably delicious food from the region. Enjoy the flair of southern Italy! The city has a first class infrastructure perfect for tourists and Foggia is also the ideal starting point for going on trips to the surrounding areas and the coast.

The city has a rich, constantly changing history. It was founded by the Normans around 1050, but rose to be the center of an empire during the 13th century.  Foggia was hit with a heavy blow in the 18th century as it was destroyed by a strong earthquake. Only slowly did the city regain its old shine during the 19th century. During the Second World War, the city was once again hit hard during the bombings. After that, Foggia turned into a modern, lively city that is characterized by service companies and agriculture. This mix is what gives the city its special charm. Immerse yourself in the vibrant big city life, have fun shopping or enjoy the southern Italian atmosphere in a street café! However, art and culture fans will also find something they like doing. Between the modern buildings you will find interesting monuments and important architectural evidence of past times. The highlights of a city tour are the arch of the palace of Frederick II, the cathedral which is considered one of the most beautiful baroque churches and the Palazzo Dogana. Evidence of a recent past can be found on the square „Piano delle Croci“. Here you will see huge silos for grains. They are regarded as a symbol of the economical development and history of the city. Next to that is the theater “Umberto Giordano” which is highly recommended, as well as the city museum (Museo Civico).

With a rental car you can reach the archeological excavations of the antique Roman colony Arpi in no time flat. It is only approximately five miles away. A journey through the countryside is incredibly charming. Foggia is located in the middle of the large and scenic „Tavoliere delle Puglie“. Highly recommended destinations for day trips include Cerignola and San Severo, the biggest cities of the province. The latter is famous beyond the region’s borders for its wine market. Alternatively, you can also go to the many port and fishing villages and a pristine island landscape.

The region around Foggia is devoted to agriculture and is especially known as a region for growing vegetables and grains.  The delicious regional cuisine is a result of the connection to the treasures from the soil.  Some of the typical dishes include the classical “orecchiette“, soups like the “maritata“ (with vegetables, cheese from sheep’s milk and bacon) or the “ncapriata“ (with beans, chicory and other wild herbs). The region is also well known for its cheese (Caciogargano, Canestrato, Cacicavallo Podalico) and production of olive oil.

You don’t have to go to first class restaurants or taverns in order to enjoy these delicacies. A very charming and unique experience is to spend your vacation on a southern Italian farm. Those preferring more classical accommodations, however, can choose from a wide range of hotels, vacation homes, holiday resorts, bed & breakfasts, boarding houses and campsites.
