 Alghero is located in the Sassari province in Sardinia, a traditional little town with just 40,390 citizens, surrounded by beautiful Sardinian countryside. Tourists from all over the world enjoy the hospitable atmosphere and traditional flair and its location makes Alghero a perfect base for explorations across the island. Before getting into your car and hitting the country road, have a good look at the town itself. The picturesque harbor is usually the starting point for a long stroll through the center which is considered one of the most beautiful Old Towns of Sardinia. After a long working day locals mingle with tourists on the beach promenade before enjoying a glass of wine in one of the numerous tavernas. The Old Town of Alghero is the picture-perfect Mediterranean mixture of old churches, shady squares, and crooked towers. Taking your car in northern direction from Alghero will lead you to Sant Joan and its miles and miles of sandy beach. The unspoiled area has a unique Sardinian coastal vegetation, partially fostered by the Stagno Calich salt lake, and the remoteness and quietness of this region is extremely soothing. For more cultural experience also visit Sassari City, the provincial capital, just 20 mi north-east of Alghero. Even though you might never have heard of it, Alghero is a great holiday destination, mixing Sardinian culture and Mediterranean hospitality with secluded beaches, great trekking trails, and beautiful weather. |
