Beware though, that with bad preparation your vacation can turn into a very costly journey. Highways in France are subject to fees, which are collected at certain intermission points on the highway. If you cannot plan your route around this (by taking smaller country roads) make sure you have your credit card ready. Local book shops and gas stations sell maps and guides, making it easier to plan to circumnavigate the highway fee. Breaking the speed limit is a serious offence in France and you will be charged horrendous fees if you get caught. In towns the limit is 50 kmph (30 mph), on country roads 90 kmph (54 mph) and on highways 130 kmph (78 mph). In residential areas and close to schools you will often find so-called sleeping policemen, speed bumps that ensure you don’t exceed the allowed speed. All those measures and the strict handling of traffic offenders have resulted in the French being quite responsible and calm drivers. Suggested Links: |
