Situated on Ireland’s western coast, Galway is a colorful coastal town and the third largest in the Republic of Ireland. With only about 70,000 inhabitants, Galway is friendly and fun.
Nature enthusiasts will especially love Galway. The Aran Island and the Cliffs of Moher are not far away and Galway’s coastal location makes many watery scenes. The town itself is bustling with always something going on, which is a prime reasons it’s nicknamed Ireland’s Cultural Heart. Each year there are dance festivals, cultural concerts, fairs, parades, and art shows. One can also take part in many Irish traditions. The city is home to the National Irish Language Theatre and produces television and radio shows in Gaelic.
Just a short boat ride from one of Galway’s ports will take you to the stunning Aran Islands, Inishmore, Inishmaan and Inisheer. Huge boulders on the island stand 25 meters tall against a backdrop of pure emerald ocean. There are also forts and ruins scattered across the islands. Very unique souvenirs can be found on Inishmore that you won’t find back on the mainland. These include paintings and drawings from local artists and handmade clothing of superb quality.
One you get back to Galway, hop in your car and drive less than and hour south to the Cliffs of Moher where you can see spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. The cliffs stand at over 394 feet and should be at the top of the must-see list while in Ireland. While looking over the side of the cliffs, one can see 300 million year old river channels at the base of the cliffs. The cliffs themselves at home to 29 different species of birds suh as Atlatic Puffins, hawks, gulls and ravens.
