Copenhagen is the largest and capital city of Denmark. It’s is a booming town offering many vibrant neighborhoods, parks and beaches.
Copenhagen is a very walkable city and can be mostly be seen on foot, but a boat tour will let you see the town from a different perspective. Nyhavn is the perfect start. Before you get started, have a drink at one of the bars or restaurants that line the harbour. This spot is popular with tourists as well as many locals.
The best view of the old city can be seen from the top of the Rundetaarn. This round tower was completed in 1642 and housed facilities important for scholars of the time period: an astronomical observatory, student’s church and a university library. The 209m long spiral walk up to the top is unique to European architecture of the time. The spiral ramp up to the top of the observatory winds around the core of the tower seven and a half times.
If you cross one of the bridges into Christianshavn, you will reach an area of Copenhagen nicknamed “little Amsterdam.” There’s one of the best Danish bakeries called Lagkegehuset just as you cross the Langebro Bridge. Buy one of the fresh rolls or tarts, sit on a bench and relax as you watch rowing boats pass through the canals. Christianshavn is a mostly residential neighbourhood and will give you a real, non-touristy feel for life in Copenhagen.
One of the most visited communities within the city of Copenhagen is the free-state Christiania. Part of the area of Christianshavn, this unique community was founded in 1971 when a group of ambitious hippies took over an area of abandoned military barracks and developed their own laws and rules. There’s an open hash market, colourful paintings on the sides of houses and funky cafes. Make sure to soak up all you can during your visit because taking photos is not allowed.
